Costa Rican coffees are among our favourites and are delicious and approachable. Costa Rica has in recent history experienced what some refer to as a "mico-mill revolution," this refers to the increased accessibility of mills to process the coffee once it has been harvested. What this has allowed is for smaller land owners and coffee farmers to be able to process their own coffee and control more of the process. This has allowed these farmers to increase quality while adding value to their own crops rather than relying on larger mills to do this for them. These same farmers can then market their own crops to coffee purchasers and develop direct relationships with these green coffee purchasers making themselves more money by making a higher quality product and dealing directly with buyers.
Coffees from Costa Rica can be either "High" or "Low" note coffees as Costa Rica grows many varieties of coffee at varying altitudes with unique micro-climates. There could be a rich chocolaty and sweet coffee with rich texture and amble body or there could be a lighter bodied, fruitier and higher acidity coffee.
