They are designed to insure water flows in only one direction within The Espresso Machine Hydraulic Circuit. Generally used off the pump and or the inlet manifold, non-return valves deploy the simplest design in that the swing valve with a pressure loaded spring which is held open by forward flowing water. If flow reverses it closes under its weight and is kept shut by back pressure acting on the closed spring.
